Process Paper
When I was tasked with the megacity project, I started with looking for the articles to use in noodletools. There are a lot of articles that discuss Rio de Janeiro, so the real task was identifying articles that provided information on the topics I needed to cover. I eventually found all the articles I needed and I took the notes I needed to take from them. I found the brazil.org.za to be very useful, as it had many articles on just what I needed. Probably the best single article I found was the Maps101 Rio de Janeiro. I also used the other sources cited on Mrs. Semple’s page.
As for my web site, I chose to make it nice and simple, and to try to make it informative, but smooth and free flowing. I thought the map section was particularly interesting, and I included a satellite map, and a political interactive map. I also included on the homepage an interactive topographical city map that was developed by the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Organizing Committee. This allows the reader to really get a feel for the diverse geography and areas that make up the city. The website addresses all of the categories on the instruction sheet. I also originally had an HTML animation to make stars around the trail of the mouse which would fade over the time space of a few seconds. It did not work out as well as I had planned, because the mouse would be classified as a non selective element in the HTML code, meaning you had to wait for the stars to disappear before being able to click on anything. I added pictures in various places to illustrate points in the text. This was the first website I ever created, so I need more practice in formatting text and adding colors and pictures.
I also struggled with the PSA. My idea was to present something urging poor parents not to make their kids work, but to keep them in school. I wanted to show kids at different ages, to illustrate the impact staying in school would have on them. Buncee did not have any photo editing software, and being as broke as I am, neither did I. So I edited a number of photos in the Scratch studio. I then took screenshots of the edited photos and entered them on Buncee. The last of my roadblocks was that I had a hard time getting Buncee to accept the audio upload for my project.
Rio de Janeiro started out as a very small settlement by the Portuguese about 450 years ago. As the website shows, it grew over the next hundred years into a mining town with a population of 43,000 people. A hundred years later it was the regional capital, blessed with a port and natural resources. The climate was hot but tolerable. It became a center of manufacturing and transportation. Its transportation capabilities connected it to other settlements in Brazil, but also to Europe, Africa, and North America. Fifty years later, when Brazil became a republic, Rio de Janeiro became the capital, and continued to be a major business center. It also developed culturally, with universities and other academic institutions. In 1960, Brasilia became the national capital, but Rio has remained a leading economic and cultural center.
In a sense, Brazil’s site has remained constant, though it has changed as the port and other areas have been constructed, and as people have built homes and businesses. Roads and railroads have connected the site with other cities and towns. Rio’s situation, meaning its location in relation to other places, including its accessibility and natural resources, has certainly changes. When it began 450 years ago, it was a tiny village, isolated and undeveloped. It has slowly grown to become the leading city of South America, with a huge population, big economy, and ability to help exploit its harbor and the natural resources that surround it, including agricultural resources.
But with all of this, the poverty described in my website is overwhelming. There are 750 slums that are found throughout the city. Over 3 million people live in bad homes or on the streets. Children are forced to work rather than go to school. Malnutrition causes some children who can go to school to do poorly at it. There is crime, much related to drugs. The poor are desperate. My research shows that the city can be proud of many things, but the problem of poverty must be addressed. Kids need to stay in school and not be forced to work, they must have good food, and even the poorest houses need running water and toilets. This will all take a lot of work and money, and encouragement.
